Not Really a Strange Thing: Cleidocranial Dysplasia

If you haven’t been living under the rock last year, you would have probably watched Cleidocranial DysplasiaNetflix’s original series Stranger Things. Gaten Matarazzo plays the role of Dustin. It is evident in the series that Dustin doesn’t have two of his front teeth as he is suffering from a rare genetic condition called cleidocranial dysplasia.

Matarazzo has used his newfound fame to raise awareness about the disease.

What is cleidocranial dysplasia?

Cleidocranial dysplasia is a rare genetic disorder that affects the formation of bones and teeth. The severity of the condition varies from one person to another. People suffering from the condition may have underdeveloped or even absent collarbones causing them to have narrow and sloping shoulders. Because the condition affects the bones, people with cleidocranial dysplasia are prone to suffering from osteoporosis.

People affected by the disorder tend to have their baby teeth longer, thus the delay in the appearance of adult teeth. Once the teeth come out, it is unusually shaped and misalignment of teeth and jaw is a common occurrence. Forming of extra teeth is also common. Some people who suffer from the condition suffer from hearing loss as well as sinus and ear infection. Delayed motor skills development in infants in also common. However, the development of the mental capacity of a child is unaffected.

How is it managed?

There are different ways to handle the disorder, depending on its severity. Therapy, medication, genetic counselling and palliative care are among the most common methods of dealing with the disorder. Gaten Matarazzo dealt with his dental abnormality by sporting dental implants for his front teeth.
